Principal's Message

I am passing this important message on to you. Please take the time to read it so we can all stay as healthy as possible:

Public health and medical experts are still strongly recommending H1N1 vaccinations for our community. While the flu seems to be waning, pandemic flu is known for coming in waves and a third wave later in the winter or spring is quite likely. We now have three and a half months experience with the H1N1 vaccine and across the country. It has been found to be quite safe, on par with the usual seasonal flu vaccine.  Children and young adults are still at higher risk for contracting this flu and specific groups are higher risk for complications due to chronic medical conditions like asthma and diabetes.

Now that public health agencies and doctors offices have more H1N1 vaccine, this is an excellent time to get an initial vaccination, or for children under 10 years who got a first dose in the fall, to get the recommended 2nd dose. Children under 10 years need a second dose to spark their immune response to a protective level.

H1N1 vaccine clinics will be held every Friday (starting 1/29) from 9 to 11 AM for all members of the public at the City of Berkeley Public Health Clinic. The new temporary location is 2500 Milvia St., Suite 114. The vaccine is FREE. You do not need to be a Berkeley resident.

EMERSON'S COINS FOR HAITI

As of last Friday, the 22nd, the Emerson community has raised over $2,000 for the earthquake victims in Haiti. Many thanks for the generous checks, bills, and every last penny. This first amount has already been given to the Red Cross and is on the way to supporting this emergency. We'll continue to collect funds until Wednesday the 27th. The fourth and fifth grade students who spearheaded this campaign did a great job of energizing and organizing us. Thanks to all!

KIDS KREATIONS UPDATE

To everyone still waiting for your Kids Kreations orders,

Thank you so much for your patience.  Kids Kreations is a small, family-run business and they've had a difficult past few months personally. Due to severe illness of several family members they had to delay printing of our materials. I've just heard from our contact and she says that they'll be shipping our orders out next week.  It will take, at most, seven days for items to arrive at Emerson.  I will pass them out as soon as I have them.

Again, thanks for your understanding.  Please feel free to contact me with any additional questions or concerns.

AUTHOR OF AMELIA BEDELIA BOOKS AT EMERSON ON FEBRUARY 2

Author Herman Parish will be coming to Emerson School next week! With his aunt, Peggy Parish, Mr. Parish wrote books about one of our favorite fictional characters: Amelia Bedelia. He has just written a new book, Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine, about what Amelia Bedelia was like as a child. On Tuesday, February 2nd from 1:30 to 2:15, Mr. Parish will be reading his book and speaking to several of the first, second, and third grade classes. He will sign books afterwards.

For those who are interested, his books will be for sale in the library from 11:20-12:45 (lunch) and right after school. Most books will be $3.99; the most expensive will be $16.99. If you would like your child to purchase a book, please send cash or a check made out to Mrs. Dalloway's, or drop by during those times. Families are welcome to attend! Please contact Ms. Claire with any questions. Many thanks to Mrs. Dalloway's bookstore on College Ave, who gave us this fabulous opportunity to meet a famous author!
